My Work for Uncanny Valley Studios - Whisper in the Walls

My Work for Uncanny Valley Studios - Whisper in the Walls

My Concept Work for my Group Project for our game Whisper in the Walls.

A theme within all my UI Art is they are all utilising paper as the main material as I took inspiration from the pile of sketchbooks that I used to have scattered around my work area whilst studying during college and 1st year of University.

Therapist Character Design :

The concept I created before it was handed off to Jess to finalise which was a Therapist character who was originally supposed to be disguised in the background whilst observing our MC who was struggling through their mental health and would have their proper introduction during one of the endings.

Park Scene :

Before handing off the environments to Edward who was our environment artist , I was tasked on creating an environment concept for Edward to later work from.

I was tasked in creating the Bus scene which would be used to take our mc of the story Rowan to either an original idea for the ending being visiting their parents or an ending that was placed into the final game was going over and travelling to meet the therapist which is also the character I was tasked to concept.

Starting Screen & Options :

The beginning designs before they were replaced after working inside of ren'py.

UI Buttons :

These are some concepts of buttons designed to go alongside the textbox designed originally by our 2D lead Jess as we decided early on to split the UI between us to split out the work evenly.

My design choices for these concepts and my pieces for these different UI work , I looked into stressful planning and studying and what that can cause. As with these button designs I wanted to use the feeling of ripped paper circles or bunch up paper balls caused from the panic and stress of designs not going correct in the mind of the player. With from my own experiences I have had times where I've had paper balls across my work space due to the healing on not having the designs looking good enough which I took into concept here with our game being supported from the research of mental health.

Industry Practice - Labour Market Research

Labour Market Research

Talking about the Labour Market refers to talking about the supply and demand for the labour in an area of the economy

The Global Games Market during 2023 :

Console Games - $53.2 Bn

Mobile Games - $ 90.4 Bn

Installed PC Games - $38.4 Bn

Browser PC Games - $ 1.9 Bn

During 2023, the global games market revenue during this time was at a total of $183.9Bn consisting of having mobile game taking the biggest amount of revenue with $89.9Bn considering that is over double of downloaded pc games revenue with $39.6Bn whilst also considering how browser PC games revenue is only $1.9Bn showcases the wider different revenue during the time frame of 2023.

Wijman T. 2024. Global Games Market Revenues in 2023 [online]. Newzoo:Blog. Available at:  https://newzoo.com/resources/blog/last-looks-the-global-games-market-in-2023#:~:text=The%20global%20games%20market%20generated,to%20grow%20again%20in%202023[Accessed 13 February 2025]

During 2023 , the main amount of revenue from the global game market came from Asia coming in with 84.6Bn with North America following behind with 49.9Bn however looking at the small revenues from Middle East & Asia and Latin America being 7.1Bn and 8.6Bn showcases such a difference in amount when looking at the different amounts.

Discussion based on Equality and Diversity

When it comes down to discussing equality and diversity relating towards the games industry and in general, that everyone should be able work the same opportunities as the next and having diversity be apart of the industry is such a positive way for the industry with having people who are able to give their views on different topics or people of different gender and different life experiences. Having equality and diversity in the industry is able to give everyone there own opinions and views on different topics to support multiple different views when looking into the games.

Industry Practice - Copyright

Copyright

What can be protected in the Games Industry by Copyright :

- Logos : Company are able to trademark their logos so people aren't able to use that logo to sell off knockoff merchandise as the logo may include different design elements such as the way the Pokémon logo is designed which is under copyright and when it comes to trademarking these logos they have to wait every 10 years and they can keep having the copyright on that logo.

- Character Assets : Nintendo is a good example of this being able to showcase their copyrighted characters with their multiple lawsuits against people when it came to people creating using their characters when they would use for example Mario being portrayed in a horrible light which could look bad on the company.

- UI Design :

- Different Fonts : Whilst Companies cant copyright the fonts if they are in writing , they are able to copyright the text files of that font.

- Building Assets Designs : When it comes down to building assets , if u were to create a game similar to Pokémon and wanted to add for example the Pokémon center , you would not be able to do that due to their assets all being under copyright however the only time u are able to copy assets from other sites is when the building designs are under public domain or free use.

- Different Words : In certain cases companies are allowed to trademark words that tie around their brand for example how Coca-Cola has trademarks for all the associated trade names and logos of their brand.

Coca Cola . 2025. Terms of use [online] . Coca Cola. Available at :https://www.worldofcoca-cola.com/about-us/terms-of-use#:~:text=In%20addition%2C%20you%20acknowledge%20that,property%20of%20their%20respective%20owners. [Accessed 16 May 2025]

When it comes to obtaining copyright in the game industry , if your making a complete original game that utilizes no assets being ripped off from other company then you would automatically have the game be considered to be under copyright.

When it comes to looking at how long copyright exists inside of the game industry relies on many different factors such as where was the origin of the games creation due to different areas around the world having different rules relating to copyright and the time of the games creation as when it comes to looking into games copyright they can last over a set number of years after the creator of that games passing as when looking into the games copyright laws over in the United States they consider where whilst the creator of that game is alive it stays until they pass plus 70 years or if the creator has passed it lasts only 70 years after their death.

Copyright infringement relates to when someone uses a company assets , characters or music and use it in their own work without paying for any of the rights for the work and trying to get away with it by either selling it in their own games and merchandise to try and make a profit.

A Case of Copyright in recent months was with Nintendo alongside the The Pokémon Company when it had filed a patent infringement lawsuit during September 2024 against the game Palworld with Nintendo considering that the game violated multiple patents that it owned.

Talking about Public Domain

When breaking down public domain , it refers to having peoples work having no protection by any sorts of intellectual property such as explained above how trademarks and copyright are used to protect a company's work.

Once a piece of work becomes public domain , it no longer belongs to a single identity as the public are the people who own it and are able to use a piece that is under public domain without needing permission from the person who created the piece.

How does Public Domain happen?

Commonly there are 4 separate ways that a piece of work falls under public domain.
- The copyright owner manages to fail when it comes to following the copyright renewal rules
- Copyright law is not able to protect this style of work
-The person who has created the piece places it under public domain themselves
- The copyright has managed to expire

Rich , S. 2025 , Welcome to the Public Domain [online] Stanford Libraries. Available at : https://fairuse.stanford.edu/overview/public-domain/welcome/ [Accessed 16 May 2025]

Trademarks

The term trademark is something that is used when u are wanting to protect your pieces of work or your entire brand whilst its not just words that are trademarkable there can be significant colours that can be trademarked or even music tracks but the only way these can be trademarked is that each individual piece has to be unique or it cant be trademarked.

However there is limitations on what can be listed for a trademark which causes a layer of difficultly trying to have something be unique enough it can be apply for a trademark.

Anon , CITMA.org. Available at : https://www.citma.org.uk/trade-marks-ip/what-is-a-trade-mark.html [ Accessed 14 May 2025]

Lists of what u can and can't trademark

Anon , Gov.uk. Available at : https://www.gov.uk/how-to-register-a-trade-mark [Accessed 14 May 2025]

How does this relate to our group

If I was too look what could be possible in our groups work , it could be possible if we were able to make custom music we could copyright that however it depends on how unique it may be or by trademarking the game studios name Uncanny Valley or the Logo we have made for our game.

Industry Practice - Role Model

Role Model

What is my Ideal Job in this Industry

For me , my ideal job being in the industry would be to work in the 3D modelling section of the industry creating different environment's , weapons and props.

Chosen Role Model to Research

My chosen role model for this industry is Holly Ellis who prioritises in making 3D environments showcased inside of their showcased portfolio on their art station. Whilst Holly Ellis has all of their work focused on environments , I wanted to look at how they used different vibrant tones in their environments and develop my own environments to create the same effects and develop my models more to fit the industry standard that these models consist of.

Holly Ellis is a 3D artist who is based in Nottingham which is good to notice as living in Nottingham myself its good to see that there are other 3D modellers that are local to where I live . Holly Ellis is a Senior Environment Artist at Dambusters Studios who primarily specialises in level art and interior design.

When it comes down to Holly Ellis' workflow creating the 1st image example by having another person in her team who is Mark Eastland who created the wbx layout beforehand and handed the layout over to Holly who took the dressing in the wbx layout with further 2D updates to be done creating such a vibrant area for a summer time setting for the Dead Island 2 DLC.

3D Modelling Tools

Considering my desired role in the Industry is relating to 3D modelling , I looked into screen skills and what techniques and software's that professional 3D modellers utilise to create final game environments and props.

Whilst working during the university years , I have been slowly improving my 3D modelling techniques and methods throughout this current year and starting to work with similar software's such as starting to work with Zbrush and working with Unreal Engine during this years set of projects whilst other skills consist of making sure that being able to implement their 3D work into different game engines and having a good understanding of how form , texture and colour are and making sure all the separate elements are able to work together.

Other skills relating to a 3D Modeller is coming down to the collaboration and organisation work as you have to stay as completely organised and making sure you are staying to a schedule and having organised files due to how many deadlines you would be receiving and alongside working in about collaboration in a team setting between different stages of your team and communicating with your team effectively to make sure the entire process runs smoothly ready for the final product.

Industry Practice : Market Research & Benchmark Games

Market Research & Benchmark Games

 Top Selling

A case seen with most of the tags on the itch.io page is how the top selling is consisting of mainly of horror games with varying prices.

Top Rated

Talking about the top rated on the itch.io page , it does not follow the theme of the other tags as the top rated relates to life simulator visual novels that follow different paths and having more unique art styles such as comparing Adventures With Anxiety and Doki Doki Literature Club having complete different artstyles.

Top Rated Visual Novel [online] . Itch.io : Visual Novel. Available at :https://itch.io/games/top-rated/genre-visual-novel [Accessed at 13 February 2025]

Most Popular

When it comes down to looking into what itch.io considered being the most popular games , it consists on mainly horror or dating style of games whilst stay to more of a cartoon style to the character designs which can make the games more appealing to a viewer scrolling through the different games on the itch.io page.

New and Popular Visual Novel [online] . Itch.io : Visual Novel. Available at : https://itch.io/games/new-and-popular/genre-visual-novel [Accessed at 13 February 2025]

Most Recent

A consistent theme that is occurring with all of the tabs within the visual novel section on the itch.io page is how the main 2 genres that have constantly shown up have been either dating or horror games due to the cartoon art style seeming to be consistent in all of the games themes.

Benchmark Games

Do NOT Take This Cat Home

A Game I wanted to look at that could have potential to be able to link to how we want our game to function and act during its production is the options that the games gives you with an underlying theme of softness with the cat being the main target however the cat becomes a danger to the player after making some seemingly pointless choices that would not really effect the story as much , we could be a good point to choose for our game relating to how mental health can be underlying in a character and the choices could drastically change the ending of the character from the first run.

Hobbies & Interests - Relates to Phycological Horror

Political / Religious Beliefs - Any Beliefs

Adventures With Anxiety

The second game I wanted to look into when attempting to link the game to game mechanics that could be a nice point to include when designing our game is how when choosing choice in this game , the character has a meter at the top and once that is depleted the game changes causing the embodiment of the characters which in this game seems to be a fox takes over the character and causing worse choices for them in the end which seems to be a good way to discuss mental health by creating these embodiments of different mental health to help support our games choices in the design phase.

Discussing the NDA

Beside looking through the sound brief , as an example of working in a games industry standard studio , we discussed creating ourselves an NDA and how that affects us in a company setting .

Screenshots of our Team Discord discussing the NDA

What exactly is an NDA and its importance in the Industry

A NDA which stands for non-disclosure agreement is a legally binding document that are utilised to stop applicants from being able to discuss different private and sensitive information online or to people they would know. NDA's are commonly signed between two or more parties to discuss private information between the company and the client such as if the client is submitting to voice a role in the company's game even if they are unable to get this role , they would still have to sign an NDA and be unable to discuss anything relating to the character until given the greenlight from the company.

NDA's are an importance to the industry as it creates a legal bind to protect information about the client or company that is deemed sensitive  and private whilst it is able to form a trust between different parties cooperating together. NDA's are an important help as they are able to determine what information can be released to the public from the client whilst underlining what areas of information are sensitive and are not allowed to be spoken about publicly until notice from the company.

NDA Example

Whilst as a group , we did not create an NDA as we did not ask for any external support during this project such as gathering voice actors to voice in our game. Whilst that was the case for our game if we ended up needing to hire anyone outside of our course or any external people , we would then need to create one for our company.

Here are screenshots taken from the government site from what a one way NDA is laid out as showcasing the types of information found on them.

For this project we had to look into a Sound Brief and what style of music we would want for our game so as a group : Me , Katie and Jess took different sections and created the sound brief and how it would work towards our game idea and what we would want.

A sound brief is a document that utilised by company's or teams to plans for music usage inside of the game or creation they are working on at the time. Sound briefs are commonly created to gather ideas on what style of music a company is wanting for their project which can be passed down to the actual music developers who will look at the brief and create tracks relevant for the game.
