Industry Practice - Finalised Game Assets & What I worked on

Finalised Game Assets & What I worked on

Besides working on the UI, I also supported my fellow teammates when it came down to the coding section and placing assets into ren'py as I was given the set tasks of taking my selected finalised UI designs and making sure to alter the code and images in the ren'py files to match ours and replace the tutorial ren'py designs and replace them with our polished artwork pieces.

Pieces of Code that I focused with

The Majority of our code was developed by our director Katie who was working on the script simutaniously whilst me and Jess worked on our own elements of the game.

As someone who has never used ren'py before it was an experience working out the different menus and scripts and screens so I was given the tasks on how are we able to change the text colours , and making it possible to have each character be linked to their own specific textbox when they appear on screen.

UI Assets

Design Choice : With all of our game assets and theme relating around how a University student is struggling to deal with mental health , I took inspiration from my own room and how I used to be when it came to struggling with studying and related all my unique assets to relating about paper and different ways u can utilise paper.

Polaroids of Our Characters

For these assets , I created separate polaroid images to attach these assets to the textbox so it's supporting our characters whilst two different characters are on screen it shows which character is the one leading the conversation.

The character assets were all provided to me by our sprite artist Jess who would give me feedback whilst I designed the boxes.

App Icon / Polaroid

This polaroid was just created originally for an icon next to the textbox as a separate image however it was now combined with the textbox and later used to create a app icon that would be displayed in the top left when playing in the game.

Textbox

Each of these textboxes have their own separate character boxes which are detailed with the polaroid and the red piece of card folded over the paper to represent the bookmark you would create within a book which I'm impressed how these turn out as they maintain their quality inside of ren'py and are able to transition smoothly onto the next character.

Choice Box

A Simple Choice box resembled a ripped page with two separate options with one being a lower opacity when u clicked onto that option.

Final Start-up Screen

The Start-up screen is my favourite out of all the different UI designs I had finalised due to being able to test different brushes and creating a crowded design filled to the brim with meaningless polaroid's and only a small piece of freedom left on the corkboard.

Scrapped Assets

Here are my designs that were originally supposed to be used by did not make the final cuts due to multiple different issues along the production line of this project.

Scrapped Button Assets

These were some original button designs that were originally going to be in the game as a way to click through the options however when it came to laying out the UI during the game trying to find a spot to place the different buttons to allow them to function however when laying out the screen it caused the buttons look lost and cluttered wherever they would be placed.

Phone Asset

During the creation of the Button assets , I was tasked to also create a rough idea for how a phone button could work inside of our game as a way to compact the UI and have the smaller buttons be made into small app icons however we realised that to create that process inside of phone would require extra steps of coding that could potentially break the inner workings of the game with how there would be needing a button that would open another set of buttons in the right constant scale that would open another screen in the correct size so instead we cut the entire option out of our games final cut.

Original Textbox & Loading Screen

I will pair these two together as these have similar reasonings as due to ren'py and having to fix multiple issues with the textbox , these designs were scrapped for more compact designs that I prefer in the end with how they flow along with the polaroid next to the textbox instead of what is happening with my old design.
