2D Toolkit - Folds

Folds

Introduction of Folds

During this session, we were learning about the different folds created by different styles of clothing due to the different thickness and stiffness of the fabric or just by the different density of may have.

We researched about 4 different points relating to folds

Pinch - related to where areas of clothing that is pinched, scrunched or gathered

Stretch - related to clothing being pulled tight

Drapery - related to clothing that is seen being affected by gravity

Finally Contour - Related to using the contour of our body to support the figuring out stage of finding how the physics are applied to the fabric

Warmup Gesture Drawing

Before starting any research on the folds , we warmed up with a set of different gesture sketch's seen below.

Here are my Examples of Work relating to each of the different folds and points with the use of different references during the lesson.

Practice using Pipe , Drop & Half Lock Folds

Practice using Spiral & Zig Zag Holds including the 1st and 2nd References

3rd , 4th , 5th , 6th References

7th , 8th 9th References

Overall Understanding of the Folds

After creating these 9 different fold sketches , I can understand that in some elements I have been able to understand the placement of the folds in examples 7 , 2 , 4 and 9th reference sketchs however looking through my 8th and 6th reference sketch's it seems that whilst drawing the references I struggled to locate the folds effectively which I'll need to improve on when it comes to creating clothes for my characters.
